I always poll my favorite friends and beauty and health gurus for their advice on how to be Better Than Before for the New Year.
Here are a few suggestions from Vera Gibbons, the founder and editor of Non Politic News, which produces a free daily nonpolitical newsletter called NoPo that covers Health/Beauty; Fitness/Diet; Fashion/Beauty; and Consumer/Personal Finance.
Previously, Vera was a financial contributor with The Early Show on CBS, worked as a correspondent for CNBC’s High Net Worth, and was a Financial Analyst for MSNBC. She appeared regularly on all NBC platforms, including the Today Show, Nightly News, and The Weather Channel’s Wake Up With Al, hosted by NBC’s Al Roker.
So the net-net is that Vera knows her trends. The following are a few of her suggestions for 2020:
1) Let’s start with your health. If you haven’t already gotten into at-home fitness, 2020 is the year to give it a go. In fact, the latest trend is workouts that don’t feel like workouts. (Think: Mirror, Peloton, etc.) and shifting away from boutique gyms, despite their best efforts to be more inclusive and cater to all ages and fitness levels.
2) Take stretching more seriously. In fact, Gold’s Gym just named “restorative fitness” (aka – “recovery”) 2020’s top fitness trend.
3) That’s not to say that high-intensity interval training sessions are waning. They’re still extremely popular (as are boxing classes and strength training) and this trend is expected to continue into the New Year, particularly as working out continues to replace Happy Hour in some circles.
4) No margarita after work? Sober is the new cool. This is a trend that investors are betting on, big time, as more and more Americans are paying greater attention to their overall mental health and well-being. Many are not only switching over to mocktails (Celery Collins anyone?), but also overhauling their diets (Yes, all about plant-based), trying to get more sleep (still an issue), are even joining private wellness social clubs (which are popping up in a number of cities) and taking wellness-designated vacations.
5) Beauty-wise, the “no makeup look” (aka beauty minimalism or anti-excess movement) was hot in 2019 and while this has the big cosmetics companies scrambling to be more creative as we move into 2020, they’re putting a greater emphasis on skincare. Indeed, customized skincare is where it’s at.
6) Because what you put on, goes in, non-toxic and safe leads the clean beauty revolution. Brands like Beautycounter, Drunk Elephant and Goop, are widely expected to escalate into 2020 and beyond. On that note, adding “ingestibles” in the form of powders, dusts, and supplements, to beauty routines will be as common as adding an eye cream.
