A talk with legendary Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller
Gymnasts are known for their strength, agility, flexibility, coordination and determination. And no one embodies all five star qualities better than the remarkable Shannon Miller. Indeed, she is the most decorated U.S. gymnast, male or female, in the history of the Olympic Games, with seven gold medals to her name. And with a combined total of 16 World Championships and Olympic medals, she is the second most decorated gymnast in U.S. history, as well. However, with all the glory came a challenge that rivaled her athletic accomplishments. In 2011, when she was only in her early thirties and a young mother, her doctor discovered a baseball-sized growth on her ovary, which was later diagnosed as ovarian cancer. However, thanks to her true Olympian work ethic and attitude, today this superstar, who is also an author and TV host, is not only a survivor but a thriver, adding ovarian cancer awareness advocate to her long list of achievements. Through her role in the Our Way Forward program, on which she has partnered with the oncology-focused biopharmaceutical company Tesaro, she is helping other women learn more about their disease and their options, as they navigate the difficult journey of ovarian cancer diagnosis, treatment, recurrence and finding their new normal.
