Feeling Better Than Before
Today Jane speaks with two renowned doctors, highly respected in their fields of mental health and pulmonary disease. Her first guest is noted psychiatrist, Dr Ken Duckworth, Chief Medical Officer of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and co-author of You Are Not Alone: The NAMI Guide to Navigating Mental Health—With Advice from Experts and Wisdom from Real People and Families. Then Jane talks to Dr. MeiLan Han, a professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care, University of Michigan, and author of Breathing Lessons: A Doctor’s Guide to Lung Health. For his part, Dr. Duckworth discusses the meaning of mental illness and it wide array of associated conditions, including eating disorders, addictive behaviors, and social anxiety, to name a few. Furthermore, he shares what red flags we all should we be aware of, what we should to know about living with mental illness, when to seek the help of a psychiatrist as opposed to a psychologist, and lifestyle modifications. Dr. Han enlightens listeners as to why it is important to raise awareness of COPD, who’s at risk, some common misconceptions about smoking and COPD, the early signs of lung health issues, when to talk to a health care provider and the best lifestyle practices to ensure health lungs. All in all, it’s part of our journey to feel better than before, mentally and physically.
