How to Be Better Than Before Rheumatoid Arthritis

An award-winning and critically acclaimed New York City chef, restaurateur and cookbook author, Seamus Mullen is known for his inventive, approachable and modern Spanish cuisine. Indeed, he rose to national prominence with the opening of Boqueria, a highly successful tapas restaurant, and as one of three finalists on the popular Food Network series “The Next Iron Chef.” Two years ago, Chef Mullen opened his first solo restaurant, Tertulia, in Manhattan’s West Village which quickly became a runaway success, attracting the likes of such celebs as Gwyneth Paltrow, Rachael Ray, and Jay Z.

But all past and present accolades aside, nothing quite prepared him for the news he received in 2007 when he was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Not that there weren’t warning signs. For many years he suffered with bouts of severe joint pain without knowing the cause. Then one morning he tried to get out of bed and collapsed.  “The pain was worse than I had ever experienced before,” he recalls. Unable to reach his phone, he stayed on the floor for hours until a neighbor heard his calls for help. After several days in the hospital, doctors determined that he, in fact, had rheumatoid arthritis.
